Purchase, NY (March 26, 2011) – The DeSales University softball team suffered its second straight sweep on Saturday afternoon, falling to Manhattanville College, 7-0 and 6-2, in the first two Freedom Conference games of the season for both clubs.

In the first game, the Bulldogs (4-6, 0-2 Freedom) had just five hits and made two costly errors aiding to a six-run second inning for the Valiants (3-4, 2-0 Freedom). Senior Jen Lococo took the loss, falling to 1-3 on the season, allowing nine hits and seven runs over four innings. Senior Kate Steiner continued her hot hitting with two of the five hits, including a double. Lococo and sophomore Julie Brugger also had doubles in the loss.

In the second game, the Bulldogs took a 2-0 lead in the second inning thanks to a two-run single from senior Kristin Schultz, plating juniors Shelly McCarthy and Brianna Chilcoat but MVille countered with a run in the bottom of the inning and four more in the third inning, thanks in part to a two-run home run from Jessica Van Galen, giving the Valiants a 5-2 lead and eventually the win.

Junior Katie Morrissey suffered the loss, allowing four runs over two innings of work, walking three and striking out three. Schultz had two of the six hits and knocked in both runs and junior Christine Petrilla played well with one hit and three solid innings in the circle allowing just two hits and one unearned run.

DeSales will return to the diamond on Thursday afternoon when they host Kean University in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
