Center Valley, PA (April 26, 2011) – A three run second inning for the Bulldogs in the first game and a five-run sixth inning in the second game for the Greyhounds was the story as the DeSales University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with 18th ranked Moravian College on a picture perfect Tuesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (17-11 overall) took game one 4-2, while the Greyhounds (30-6 overall) used its five-run sixth inning en route to a 6-1 win in game two.
In the opener Moravian went on top 2-0 in the top of the second inning but the Bulldogs had the immediate answer, scoring three runs in the bottom of the frame thanks to a two-RBI double from freshman
Laura Pironi and an RBI single from senior
Kate Steiner.
DSU added an insurance run in the fifth when Steiner worked a lead-off walk. Senior
Kristin Schultz laid down a sacrifice bunt in front of the plate and no Greyhound covered third as Steiner scampered over to third base. On the play, MC's second baseman threw over to third but the throw was high and Steiner scored on the errant throw.
Senior
Jen Lococo earned the win pitching 4.1 innings allowing six hits and two runs, striking out two. Junior
Katie Morrissey was dominant in relief mowing down the Greyhounds over the final 2.2 innings, allowing just two bloop singles and striking out five of 10 batters faced. Junior
Christine Petrilla was 2-for-2 to lead the six hit attack.
In the second game, DeSales took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single from Lococo plating Steiner and Moravian tied the game in the third on a solo home run from senior
Amanda Paulus. The game remained tied entering the fifth when Moravian struck for five runs, four of which were unearned. Sophomore
Shannen Mohr capped the rally with a solo home run for the Greyhounds.
Senior
Elizabeth Python did all the rest, pitching a complete-game allowing just five hits and striking out seven. Morrissey took the loss for the Bulldogs, pitching 2.2 innings of relief allowing five runs, one earned, and striking out three.
DeSales returns to action on Thursday afternoon when they host William Paterson University in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
