Wilkes-Barre, PA (April 9, 2011) – After a disappointing sweep at Manhattanville College to open the Freedom Conference schedule the DeSales University softball team has rebounded with four straight wins in Freedom Conference play including a sweep of Wilkes University on Saturday afternoon at the Ralston Athletic Complex.
The Bulldogs improve to 11-7 overall and 4-2 in the Freedom with the two wins, while Wilkes falls to 3-15 overall and 2-6 in the Freedom. DSU took game one, 4-0, behind a six-hit shutout from senior
Jen Lococo and followed that with a 2-1 win in game two, behind seven strong innings from junior
Katie Morrissey, allowing just three hits.
In the first game, the Bulldogs scored once in the third when senior
Kate Steiner singled, stole second, and scored on an RBI double off the bat of fellow senior
Kristin Schultz. DSU added three insurance tallies in the top of the seventh when freshman
Cassie Wagman hit a solo homer to lead off the inning and Lococo plated freshman
Laura Pironi and junior
Brianna Chilcoat later in the inning on a two-out single.
Lococo was dynamite in the circle, scattering six hits and walking just one while fanning nine to lower her season ERA to 2.37 on the season. Steiner had two more hits and scored once to lead a nine-hit attack that saw eight Bulldogs register at least one base knock.
In the second game, Morrissey followed Lococo's performance with a gem of her own, allowing just three hits and one run over seven innings striking out two. Opponent's are now batting just .157 off her this season as she improves to 4-2 on the year with a 2.89 ERA.
DeSales scored its runs in the first and second inning. In the first Steiner walked to lead-off the game and came around to score four batters later on a two-error by the Colonel shortstop. Wagman then gave DSU the only other run it needed, her second solo homer of the day to lead off the second frame. Steiner finished 2-for-2 and is now batting an impressive .516 this season.
The Bulldogs will return to action tomorrow afternoon when they look to make it six straight Freedom wins when they host FDU-Florham in a Freedom Conference doubleheader beginning at Noon.
