Softball Sweeps DH at DVC to Open Conference Season Undefeated

Senior Christine Petrilla earned the win in game one and had two hits and two RBIs in game two on Saturday.

Doylestown, PA (March 24, 2012) – The DeSales University softball team saw its offense come to life on Saturday, scoring 11 runs in game one and 14 more runs in game two to sweep a Freedom Conference doubleheader at Delaware Valley College, 11-4 and 14-4, to open the conference schedule undefeated.

The Bulldogs (4-10, 2-0 Freedom) trailed 3-2 in game one entering the fifth inning before scoring nine times in top of the inning on eight hits and three DVC (6-5, 0-4 Freedom) errors.  Freshman Carly Bartholomew started the rally with a double and fellow freshman Taylor Kelly also doubled in the inning.

The Aggies answered with a solo run in the bottom of the fifth, but the Bulldogs stranded the bases loaded in the sixth and retired the side in order in the seventh to preserve the win.  Freshman Shelby Wilson and freshman Sarah Giammarese each had two hits and Giammerese and junior Julie Brugger each had two RBIs in game one.  Brugger, Bartholomew, and senior Brianna Chilcoat each scored twice.

Senior Christine Petrilla earned the win in the circle, lasting 5.2 innings allowing eight hits and two earned runs.  It was her second win of the season.

In the second game, the game was tied entering the fourth inning before DSU exploded for three runs in the fourth and fifth inning and put an exclamation point on the win with seven runs in the seventh inning.

Chilcoat finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored, Petrilla was 2-for-5 with two RBIs, senior Shelly McCarthy scored three times, Wilson was 4-for-4 with three runs scored, Bartholomew went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored, and junior Courtney McKenna finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs in game two.

Freshman Rachel Vogel earned her first career win in the circle, lasting 6.2 innings scattering nine hits and allowing four runs.  Vogel struck out three and did not walk a batter.

DSU returns to action on Sunday when they host Rutgers-Newark in the Bulldogs' first home doubleheader of the season beginning at Noon.
