Center Valley, PA (March 24, 2013) – Kean University used a four-run first inning in game one and a nine-run sixth inning in game two powering the Cougars past DeSales University, 7-1 and 14-5, in a non-conference doubleheader on another chilly Sunday afternoon.
In game one KU's
Katie Schuh opened the game with a solo homer just inside the right-field foul pole and after back-to-back walks the Cougars'
Courtney Melchionna hit a three-run shot also just inside the right-field foul pole to give Kean a 4-0 lead.
The lead grew to 7-0 in the fifth before DSU scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the fifth on a bases loaded walk from freshman
Michelle Gessner. Freshman
DJ McCauley took the loss allowing six earned runs over 4.1 innings, striking out two.
In game two, DSU opened the scoring scoring five times in the bottom of the third inning on RBI singles from McCauley, freshman
Sam Gibson, sophomore
Kayla Adanalian, and an RBI double from senior
Julie Brugger.
Kean chipped away at the lead with a solo run in the fourth and scored two unearned runs in the fifth before opening the flood gates in the sixth with nine runs including home runs from
Casey Glatts and
Courtney Yard to make it a 12-5 game and eventually a 14-5 win.
Senior
Brittany Wilson suffered the loss allowing four runs, three earned, pitching to just four batters after relieving sophomore
Rachel Vogel who pitched well at the start allowing four runs over five innings before being pulled with a 5-4 lead after allowing a solo homer to lead-off the sixth inning.
Sophomore
Taylor Kelly, McCauley, and Gibson each had two hits in the loss to lead the offensive attack.
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday, March 26th when they travel to The College of New Jersey for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
