McCauley/Vogel Lead Bulldogs to Sweep at Eastern, 6-2 and 9-3

Sophomore Rachel Vogel earned her first win of the year with seven solid innings, striking out seven at Eastern.

St. David's, PA (March 28, 2013) – Freshman DJ McCauley and sophomore Rachel Vogel each pitched complete-games and also contributed with their bats leading the DeSales University to a doubleheader sweep at Eastern University, 6-2 and 9-3, keeping the Bulldogs unbeaten in Freedom Conference play this season.

In the first game, freshman Michelle Gessner got things started with a lead-off homer and senior Julie Brugger pushed two more runs across later in the inning with a two-RBI double.  Eastern pulled to within one run in the fourth, but a solo homer from sophomore Shelby Wilson in the fifth and two more runs in the sixth including an RBI double from McCauley made it a 6-2 game and McCauley did the rest.

McCauley earned her fourth win of the season with seven innings allowing just seven hits and two runs, striking out two and not walking a batter.  She was also 2-for-4 at the plate with an RBI and run scored.  Freshman Emily Hockman was 2-for-4 with two runs scored, while S. Wilson and sophomore Taylor Kelly also had two hits in the game one win.

In the second game, the Bulldogs broke open a scoreless game with three tallies in the third inning.  Sophomore Carly Bartholomew had the big blow in that inning, a two-run single.  McCauley led a three-run fifth to make it 6-0 Bulldogs with a solo home run and Vogel added a two-run double.

DSU led 9-0 after scoring three more in the top of the seventh including an RBI single from sophomore Kayla Adanalian and an RBI groundout from Gessner before Eastern plated three unearned runs in the bottom of the inning.

Vogel earned her first win of the season pitching seven innings allowing eight hits, three unearned runs, and striking out seven without issuing a walk.  Vogel and McCauley combined to not issue a walk over 14 innings on Thursday.

Vogel also went 2-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs, Adanalian was 3-for-3 with an RBI, Bartholomew finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs, and Hockman also had two hits in the win.

The Bulldogs are off for Easter weekend and will return to action on Thursday, April 4th at Muhlenberg College for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30 pm.
