Gibson/Hockman Leads Sweep of Elizabethtown, 9-1 and 9-1

Freshman Sam Gibson went 5-for-5 with her first career home run in the sweep of Elizabethtown College.

Center Valley, PA (April 10, 2013) – Freshman Samantha Gibson went a combined 5-for-5 with four RBIs and her first career home run and freshman Emily Hockman was 6-for-7 with three RBIs leading the DeSales University softball team a doubleheader sweep of Elizabethtown College by identical 9-1 scores in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon.

In the first game, the Bulldogs racked up 12 hits and eight-run ruled the Blue Jays after five innings scoring once in the first, twice in the second and third, and four times in the fourth.  Freshman DJ McCauley earned her seventh win of the season allowing just two hits and one run, while striking out four in the win.

DSU got on the board in the first on an RBI single from sophomore Carly Bartholomew and added two more in the second on an RBI single from Hockman and an RBI double from McCauley.  In the third, Gibson plated two with her first career dinger, a long homer over the centerfield fence, and in the fourth, senior Julie Brugger, Bartholomew, sophomore Shelby Wilson, and sophomore Ericka Esposito all had RBIs.

Seven of the nine starters had at least one hit led by Gibson who went 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two runs scored.  Bartholmew, Wilson, Hockman, and McCauley also had two hits in the game one win.

In the second game, DSU stormed out on top scoring five times in the first on an RBI double from Hockman, RBI singles from Bartholomew, Gibson, and sophomore Rachel Vogel, and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Taylor Kelly.

ETown got one run back in the top of the fourth inning but the Bulldogs plated two in the bottom of the fourth and the bottom of the fifth to end the game.  In the fourth, Brugger knocked in a run on a groundout to second base and Gibson knocked in her second run of the game with a single.  DSU ended the game in the fifth on an RBI single from Hockman scoring Kelly, who doubled, and an RBI groundout from McCauley scoring pinch-hitter, senior Meredith Kelly, who walked earlier in the inning.

Vogel earned the win, her fourth of the season scattering seven hits over five innings and striking out four.  She lowered her team-best ERA to 2.17.  Hockman finished the game 4-for-4 and is now batting a team-high .403 on the season, while Gibson went 3-for-3 in game two.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, April 13th when they host FDU-Florham in an important Freedom Conference doubleheader beginning at Noon.
