Center Valley, PA (April 13, 2013) – The DeSales University softball team kept its unblemished Freedom Conference record alive on Saturday afternoon, sweeping FDU-Florham by scores of 4-1 and 7-4, to clinch a Freedom Conference spot and improve to a perfect 10-0 in the Freedom this season.
The Bulldogs have now won eight straight games and are 17-6-1 overall and 10-0 in the Freedom with four Freedom Conference games remaining on the schedule at Manhattanville College and vs. King's College. DSU is assured of at least a top two seed in the Freedom Conference playoffs pending the results of the final two Freedom doubleheaders.
In the first game on Saturday sophomore
Carly Bartholomew got things started with a solo home run to centerfield and sophomore
Taylor Kelly singled home fellow sophomore
Shelby Wilson to give DSU a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Senior
Julie Brugger made it 3-0 in the third with a single scoring freshman
Emily Hockman and Wilson provided the fourth and final run with a single down the left field line in the seventh scoring Bartholomew.
Freshman
DJ McCauley earned her eighth win of the season allowing just three hits over seven innings, striking out six. Hockman and Wilson each had two hits to lead the bat attack, while Bartholomew finished 1-for-1 with two runs scored.
In the second game, FDU scored first opening up a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning but left the bases loaded and the Bulldogs took advantage answering in the bottom of the first with five runs on a three-run homer from Brugger and a two-run shot by freshman
Samantha Gibson.
DSU added solo runs in the fourth on an RBI single from McCauley and the fifth on an RBI single from Kelly and held off a seventh inning rally by the Devils to earn the 7-4 win.
Sophomore
Rachel Vogel earned her fifth win of the season allowing just seven hits and one earned run over 6.1 innings, striking out four. Senior
Brittany Wilson earned her first save of the season, getting the final out in the seventh to leave the bases loaded.
McCauley went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Brugger had three RBIs, and Kelly had two more hits to lead the offensive attack.
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday when they host local rival Moravian College in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:30 pm.
