Center Valley, PA (April 7, 2013) – Freshman
DJ McCauley and sophomore
Rachel Vogel were brilliant on Sunday combining to allow just six hits, no walks, and struck out 20 Cougars en route to a doubleheader sweep of Misericordia University by scores of 1-0 and 4-2 to stay unbeaten in Freedom Conference play.
In the opener, McCauley followed up her no-hitter on Saturday with a two-hit shutout on Sunday allowing just three base-runners none of which reached second base striking out 12 including the side in the fifth inning. She improves to 6-3 on the season and lowers her ERA to 2.40.
The Bulldogs scored their lone run in the fifth inning when freshman
Emily Hockman singled and scored on a single by McCauley that slid thru the left-fielder's legs and to the fence as Hockman raced around the bases with the eventual winning run. Hockman finished the game a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate.
In the second game freshman
Michelle Gessner started the game off with a solo home run to left center to give DSU a 1-0 lead. After the Cougars tied the game at one in the top of the second inning, Gessner singled home Vogel to make it 2-1 and Gessner delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the fourth staking the Bulldogs to a 4-1 advantage.
Vogel did the rest allowing a single run in the sixth and pitched out of a bases loaded one out jam in the top of the seventh to earn her third win of the year. She did not walk a batter and struck out eight.
Gessner finished the game 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Vogel added two hits and two runs scored at the plate.
The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, April 10th when they host Elizabethtown College in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
