Montclair, NJ (May 11, 2013) – Freshman
Michelle Gessner delivered a two-out single thru the left side scoring sophomore
Shelby Wilson with the game winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning backing senior
Brittany Wilson's three-hit shutout in a 1-0 win keeping the Bulldogs alive in the NCAA Regional Tournament at Montclair State University on Saturday morning.
The Bulldogs (30-11-1) become the first team in program history to win 30+ games in a season. DSU advances to play the winner of the Kean/Susquehanna game scheduled to begin at 12:20 this afternoon. First pitch for that game is scheduled for 4:00 pm later this afternoon.
B. Wilson was a late addition to the circle on Saturday after freshman
DJ McCauley was uncomfortable warming up in the pen. It was Wilson's first start of the season and she delivered in a big way allowing just three hits and striking out two. Roger Williams never had a player reach third base and had more than one base-runner in an inning just twice. She is now 5-1 on the year with a 2.33 ERA.
The Bulldogs themselves had just seven hits with Gessner (two) and S. Wilson (three) accounting for five of the seven. DSU threatened in the fifth putting runners on first and second with two outs but a ground out ended the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, S. Wilson singled thru the right side and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt by B. Wilson. After a fly out to right field put two outs on the board, Gessner worked a deep count and singled thru the left side and Wilson hustled home just beating a wide throw home by the RWU left fielder.
The 1-0 score marks the third straight game that the final score has been 1-0. The Bulldogs pitching staff has not allowed an earned run in the last 33 innings pitched, a span of five games.
