Wilkes-Barre, PA (May 3, 2013) – Freshman DJ McCauley went 4-for-4 with two RBIs and earned her 14th win of the season in the circle leading the DeSales University softball team past FDU-Florham, 5-1, in the opening game of the Freedom Conference Softball Championships being held at Ralston Athletic Complex at Wilkes University on Friday morning.

DSU took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning taking advantage of two Devil errors but left the bases loaded and had a runner thrown out at the plate before more damage could be done.

The game remained 2-0 entering the bottom of the fourth inning when McCauley singled home sophomore Ericka Esposito extending its lead to 3-0 added two more insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth inning when McCauley singled home freshman Michelle Gessner and freshman Samantha Gibson plated sophomore Taylor Kelly.

FDU put its first two runners on-base with back-to-back doubles to open the seventh inning before McCauley set the next three batters down in order to preserve the 5-1 win.

McCauley improves to 14-4 on the season and lowers her season ERA to 1.78.  Gessner scored twice out of the lead-off spot and had a strong defensive game at shortstop.  Kelly finished with three hits and two runs scored as the top of the Bulldogs lineup went 8-for-11 with four runs scored and two RBIs.
