Wilkes-Barre, PA (April 2, 2014) – Sophomore
DJ McCauley earned both a win and a save and added four hits leading the DeSales University softball team to a doubleheader sweep over Wilkes University, 6-0 and 4-3, to keep the Bulldogs unbeaten in Freedom Conference play on Wednesday afternoon.
In the opener, McCauley fired her third shutout of the season allowing just three hits and striking out five to lead DeSales (8-5, 4-0 Freedom).
DSU scored three times in both the first and fourth innings. In the first McCauley, freshman
Alexa Beaumont, and sophomore
Samantha Gibson each had RBI singles and in the fourth, Beaumont had a two-run double and McCauley an RBI single.

Michelle Gessner each had two hits in the game one win, while sophomore
Emily Hockman scored twice.
In the second game, junior
Rachel Vogel battled thru 5.2 innings scattering 10 hits and allowing three runs before McCauley entered the circle in the sixth to get the final out with runners on second and third and stranded a one-out single in the seventh to earn her first save of the season and preserve the win for Vogel and the sweep for the Bulldogs.
DSU took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when McCauley knocked in Gessner with an RBI single but the Colonels tied the game on a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the inning.
It remained a 1-1 game entering the third inning when the Bulldogs struck for three runs on a two-RBI single from Gibson and an RBI groundout from sophomore
Amanda Setzer. Wilkes chipped away with solo runs in the fifth and the sixth before McCauley closed the door.
The Bulldogs had just five hits in the game two win including two from McCauley.
DSU returns to action on Saturday, April 5
th when they host Manhattanville College in another Freedom Conference doubleheader beginning at 1:30 pm.
