Center Valley, PA (November 1, 2008) – The DeSales University men's soccer team concluded its 2008 season settling for a 3-3 double overtime tie with King's College after the Bulldogs had opened up a 3-0 halftime lead but could not hold on in the second half in a Freedom Conference game on Saturday afternoon.

The tie ends DSU's season with a 6-12-1 overall record and a 2-5-1 mark in the Freedom Conference, while the Monarchs move to 13-1-5 overall and 3-1-4 in the Freedom Conference.

DSU dominated play in the opening half taking a 3-0 halftime lead after out-shooting King's, 9-5. Senior Andrew Marshall (Greene, NY/Greene Central) started the scoring with his third goal of the season scoring off a throw-in from junior Dustin Sturm (North Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) at the 12:23 mark.

Fellow senior David Ackley (North Cape May, NJ/Lower Cape May) made it a 2-0 game when he scored for the second time this season when he knocked home the rebound of a saved shot from senior German Reyes (Beach Lake, PA/Honesdale) at 24:49. The Bulldogs were not done scoring as freshman Matthew Germscheid (Mullica Hill, NJ/St. Augustine Prep) scored his first career goal with just 1:47 left on the first-half clock when he knocked home the rebound of a saved shot from Sturm.

The first five minutes was back and forth in the second half before King's broke thru at the 52:45 mark as senior Cameron Audette scored on a penalty kick to cut the deficit to two goals. On the play, junior Kevin Lawrence (Norristown, PA/Kennedy-Kenrick) was given a yellow card and was eventually awarded a second yellow (turned into a red) following the PK and was forced off the field.

The Bulldogs were left with just 10 players on the field due to Lawrence's infraction and with no back-up goalkeeper available due to injury; Sturm was inserted in between the pipes for the first time in his career.

DSU held off many charges from the Monarchs over the next 10+ minutes but fell another man down at the 62:41 mark when Marshall received his second yellow card (turned into a red), giving DSU just nine players to King's 11 in the field.

Less than two minutes after Marshall was removed from the game, King's cut the deficit down to one goal as Mark Timko took a centering pass in front of the goal and deposited it into the net from point blank range.

The Bulldogs held off the Monarchs over the next 15 minutes but with 8:45 on the clock, King's was able to tie the score when a centering pass from Joe Bender was deflected by Sturm but unable to be cleared by the defense and Ryan Symons tapped home the tying goal into the open net.

King's dominated the offensive chances over the final eight minutes of regulation and both overtime periods with DeSales playing with just nine players. KC held an 11-2 edge in shots in the second half and both overtimes, but were never able to get the game-winner as both teams settled for the tie.

Lawrence made four saves for the Bulldogs before leaving the game, while Sturm was terrific in goal over the final 57+ minutes making two saves in his debut between the pipes.
