Purchase, NY (April 19, 2008) – The DeSales University softball team split its Freedom Conference doubleheader at Manhattanville College on Saturday afternoon dropping game one, 11-2, before rebounding to win game two, 8-1, and combined with a King's College loss to Delaware Valley College in game two of its doubleheader today has clinched the #1 seed in the Freedom Conference playoffs in two weeks.
The Bulldogs (17-11, 8-2 Freedom) were picked to finish last in the Freedom Conference pre-season poll and with two games still remaining on the Freedom Conference schedule have already clinched the top spot heading into the post-season two weekends from now.
In game one on Saturday, DSU committed six errors and allowed 11 runs on 10 hits falling to the Valiants. Manhattanville broke the game open with a two-out grand slam to take a 5-0 lead in the second inning and added six runs in the third frame to open up an 11-1 lead and never looked back in the opener.
Sophomore Kristen Cybularz (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll) took the loss allowing four earned runs over two innings pitched. Junior Maddie Roxandich (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) had two hits and scored a run, while sophomores Kyra Monarek (Allentown, PA/Parkland) and Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) each had an RBI in the game one loss.
The second game was all DeSales as the Bulldogs opened up a 3-0 lead on a two-run home run from freshman Kate Steiner (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) in the fourth inning and broke the game open in the fifth with five runs including a three-run home run from junior Kelly Moran (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic).
Freshman Jen Lococo (Easton, PA/Freedom) did the rest earning her ninth win of the season with seven innings allowing just two hits and one unearned run, while striking out three. Moran and Steiner combined to knock in six runs, while Monarek and Roxandich each had two hits in the game two win. Junior Amanda Kensecki (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) and freshman Kylie Fehnel (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) each had one hits, two runs scored and an RBI in the win.
DSU returns to action on Sunday, April 20th when they travel cross-town to take on local rival Moravian College in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
