Center Valley, PA (April 26, 2008) – The DeSales University softball team concluded the regular season portion of the Freedom Conference schedule with a sweep of Arcadia University, 6-0 and 8-7 (8 Inn.), to finish 10-2 in the Freedom Conference this season.
The Bulldogs are now 22-12 overall and are now just four wins shy of breaking the school-record for wins in a season (25 – 1995). Arcadia falls to 14-21-1 overall and 3-9 in the Freedom Conference with the losses. DSU is the #1 seed in the Freedom Conference playoffs and will take on the #4 seed, FDU-Florham, in the first game of the post-season tournament on Friday at 11:00 am. The Freedom Conference playoffs will be held at Wilkes University on Friday and Saturday.
In game one on Saturday, sophomore Kristen Cybularz (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll) and freshman Larissa Tenley (Sinking Spring, PA/Conrad Weiser) combined on a seven-hit shutout as Cybularz tossed the first four innings allowing just four hits and striking out two to earn the win, her eighth of the season, and Tenley converted her fourth save of the season, allowing three hits and striking out two over the final three frames.
Offensively, DSU took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on an RBI triple from junior Jamie Pfitzenmayer (Annandale, NJ/Hunterdon Central) and added four more runs in the fifth on an RBI single from junior Kelly Moran (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic), an RBI single from freshman Jen Lococo (Easton, PA/Freedom) and a two-RBI single from freshman Kristin Schultz (Laurys Station, PA/Parkland).
The Bulldogs tacked on one more run in the sixth on an RBI double from sophomore Kyra Monarek (Allentown, PA/Parkland) to provide the final tally. Lococo and junior Maddie Roxandich (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) were the lone players with multiple hits (two) in the game one win.
In game two, DSU took a 5-2 lead after two innings scoring three in the first and two in the second. Moran had a two-RBI single in the first and Monarek and junior Amanda Kensecki (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) each had RBI's in the second inning. Arcadia fought back to tie the game at five before Lococo smoked her second home run of the season in the fifth to give DSU a 6-5 lead but that was short lived as the Knights rallied for two runs in the sixth to go on top, 7-6.
Pfitzenmayer wasted no time re-tying the game with a solo home run, her fourth of the season, in the bottom of the sixth and DSU won the game in the eighth inning when Roxandich scored from second base after a throwing error by the Knight third baseman with two outs to end the game.
Tenley earned the win in game two, tossing three innings of relief allowing three hits and one run, while striking out two. She is now 4-2 on the season with four saves. Monarek was 3-for-4 with two runs scored, while Roxandich, Kensecki, Lococo and Pfitzenmayer all had two hits in the game two win. Moran knocked in two runs to give her a team-high 26 RBI's on the season.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Wednesday when they host Albright College in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm in preparation for the Freedom Conference playoffs next weekend.
