Center Valley, PA (March 28, 2009) – Freshman Katie Morrissey (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) and sophomore Jen Lococo (Easton, PA/Freedom) combined to allow just one run leading the DeSales University softball team to a doubleheader sweep of Freedom Conference rival King's College on a cloudy and windy Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs have now won four straight and record their first sweep of a Freedom Conference foe this season. DSU is now 14-6 overall and 5-3 in the Freedom, while the Lady Monarchs fall to 10-8 overall and 3-3 in the Freedom.

In the first game, Morrissey continued her recent dominance posting her fifth straight win and her third shutout among her last five starts. She allowed just two hits and struck out seven to improve to 7-2 on the year. Only one Lady Monarch runner went past first base but was stranded at third in the top of the fifth inning as Morrissey induced consecutive fly outs to end the inning.

DSU also caught fire at the plate in the opener with eight hits and six runs. Senior Jamie Pfitzenmayer (Annandale, NJ/Hunterdon Central) led things off with a single in the first inning and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Lococo. DSU made it 3-0 in the third inning when Lococo doubled home junior Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) and later scored on an RBI double from sophomore Kate Steiner (Walnutport, PA/Northampton).

The Bulldogs provided the exclamation point in the fifth with three runs including an RBI double from senior Amanda Kensecki (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty), another RBI hit from Steiner and an RBI fielder's choice from senior Kelly Moran (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic). Andrews (two hits, two runs), Kensecki (two hits, one RBI), Lococo (two RBI's), and Steiner (two hits, two RBI's) led the offensive attack in game one.

In the nightcap it was Lococo's turn on the mound. She scattered eight hits over seven innings, struck out three and got some terrific defense from all over the field that saw DSU throw four Lady Monarchs out at the plate. In the top of the first inning, KC loaded the bases with no one out only to see junior Kyra Monarek (Allentown, PA/Parkland) and Lococo each throw runners out at home including a gorgeous diving flip by Lococo on a dribbler just in front of the plate for the second out.

In the third inning, Piftzenmayer came up firing for the third out of the inning, gunning down Gretchen Tholen at home trying to score from second base on a single and Kensecki also chucked a Lady Monarch out at the plate when her toss from down the right field line ended the game as sophomore Kristin Schultz (Laurys Station, PA/Parkland) lunged to make a terrific tag at the plate.

At the dish, DSU jumped ahead early once again scoring twice in the first inning as Pfitzenmayer reached base via error and scored on an RBI base hit from Steiner and Lococo crossed home plate on an RBI double from Moran. DSU added an insurance tally in the fifth when Piftzenmayer led off with a double and came around to score on an RBI groundout from Kensecki. Pfitzenmayer scored two of the three runs in the second game as DSU scratched out three runs on just four hits.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to return to action on Sunday when they host Kean University in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm. Updates on the game status due to rain in the forecast will be posted on the DSU schedule in the morning if the game is postponed.
