Softball Earns Important Sweep of FDU-Florham

Senior Jamie Pfitzenmayer improved her seasonal average to .435 with four more hits on Sunday afternoon.
Center Valley, PA (April 19, 2009) – Senior Jamie Pfitzenmayer (Annandale, NJ/Hunterdon Central) totaled four hits and four runs scored as the DeSales University softball stayed in the hunt for the coveted No. 1 seed in the Freedom Conference playoffs with an important sweep of FDU-Florham in a Freedom Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.

The Bulldogs move into a tie for first place with Misericordia University at 10-4 in the Freedom Conference standings heading into the final week of the regular season. DSU is 22-10 overall with three doubleheaders scheduled for this week including an important home doubleheader with Delaware Valley College on Saturday. The Devils fall to 16-14 overall and 4-10 with the losses today.

In game one today, freshman Katie Morrissey (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) earned her team-leading 12th win of the season, tossing another complete game scattering eight hits, allowing one unearned run, and striking out two. Pfitzenmayer provided all the offense DSU would need as she led off the bottom of the first inning with her first home run of the season and doubled to lead off the third inning, eventually coming around to score on an RBI groundout from senior Amanda Kensecki (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty).

The third one was provided in the second inning when sophomore Kristin Schultz (Laurys Station, PA/Parkland) singled, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from junior Kyra Monarek (Allentown, PA/Parkland) and scored on a double from senior Maddie Roxandich (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic).

In addition to her two hits, two runs scored, and one RBI, Pfitzenmayer also had an assist from the outfield, teaming with Monarek to nail down FDU's first chance at a run in the top of the first inning at the plate. Pfitzenmayer also made a gorgeous catch, while slamming into the right-center field wall in the top of the fifth inning saving at least two runs with the third out of the inning.

In the second game, sophomore Jen Lococo (Easton, PA/Freedom) tossed another gem of a game, recording her third shutout of the season allowing just two hits over five innings, while striking out three to improve to 9-4 on the year and lower her team-low ERA to 1.31 on the season.

Leading 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning after Lococo had singled home Pfitzenmayer in the first and junior Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) had scored in the third on some terrific base-running, the Bulldogs blew the game wide open with five two-out runs.

Pfitzenmayer knocked the first two in with a bases loaded single up the middle; Andrews tripled home two more runs, and later came around to score on a base hit from Kensecki. After sophomore Kate Steiner (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) and senior Kelly Moran (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) each reached base to start the fifth, freshman Shelly McCarthy (Allentown, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) hit her first career home run, a two-run shot down the left-field line ending the game via the eight-run rule and the scoreboard reading 9-0.

Pfitzenmayer had two more hits, two more runs, and knocked in two runs in the game two win to finish 4-for-6 with four runs scored and three RBI's on the day. Andrews scored twice and knocked two runs in the second game, while Schultz finished with two hits and McCarthy scored twice and knocked in two runs in the nightcap.

DeSales returns to action on Thursday, April 23rd when they travel to William Paterson University for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
