Wilkes-Barre, PA (April 1, 2010) – The DeSales University softball team suffered a heart-breaking loss in game one but did not hang its heads and scored five runs in the first inning of game two to salvage a split in a Freedom Conference doubleheader at King's College on Thursday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (11-9, 5-1 Freedom) dropped the first game, 3-1, as the Lady Monarchs (7-9, 2-2 Freedom) came back from a 1-0 deficit in the sixth inning with a three-run home run with two outs to spoil a terrific pitching performance from sophomore Katie Morrissey (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township). Morrissey had a perfect game thru 4.2 innings pitched, but in the sixth, with two on and two out, Kaitlin Siegfried caught up to a high fast ball and gave KC the comeback win.

Morrissey struck out nine and allowed just four hits over six innings to fall to 5-5 on the year. Senior Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) had two hits and senior Emily Hoffman (Laceyville, PA/Wyalusing Valley) accounted for the lone DSU run, scoring on an RBI single from senior Kyra Monarek (Allentown, PA/Parkland) after leading off the inning with a triple.

In the second game, DSU exploded for five runs and chased the Lady Monarchs game two starter in the second inning and eventually held on for the 6-4 win. The bottom of the lineup did all the damage in game two as junior Kate Steiner (Walnutport, PA/Northampton), sophomore Shelly McCarthy (Allentown, PA/Bethlehem Catholic), senior Kristen Cybularz (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll), and Monarek all had two hits and combined to knock in all six runs in the game two win.

Junior Jen Lococo (Easton, PA/Freedom) earned the win on the mound, scattering seven hits over seven innings with six strikeouts to improve to 5-3 on the season.

DSU doesn't return to action until Thursday, April 8th when they travel to Widener University for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 4:00 pm.
