Madison, NJ (May 1, 2010) – Junior Kate Steiner (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) had a huge day on Saturday going a combined 4-for-9 with two home runs and eight RBIs leading the DeSales University softball team to a doubleheader sweep of FDU-Florham, 4-3 and 13-3, in Freedom Conference action as the Bulldogs finish the regular season in first place, earning the #1 seed in this week's Freedom Conference playoffs.
The Bulldogs finish with a 23-17 overall record and a nearly flawless 12-2 mark in Freedom Conference play. DSU will be the #1 seed in this upcoming weekend's Freedom Conference playoffs tournament held at Delaware Valley College on Friday and Saturday. The Bulldogs will open the tournament at 11:00 am on Friday vs. the #4 seed Misericordia University. A complete schedule of the tournament with game times, etc. will be available on Monday afternoon.
In game one on Saturday, the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead in the third inning when sophomore Christine Petrilla (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) hit a two-run single plating senior Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) and Steiner. The Devils responded with two runs in the fourth to take a 3-2 lead and that score stood into the seventh inning when Steiner came to the plate with Andrews on-base via a one-out walk as she parked her first homer of the day giving DSU a 4-3 lead.
Petrilla did the rest retiring the side in the seventh with no damage to earn her sixth win of the season allowing just three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. DSU had just five hits but that was enough as Steiner and Andrews scored all four of the Bulldogs runs.
In the second game DSU took a 4-0 lead thru four innings and led 4-2 entering the sixth before a nine-run top of the sixth inning blew the game open en route to a 13-3 win. Steiner had the big blow in the sixth with a grand slam, plating the first four runs as the Bulldogs sent 16 players to the plate in the inning.
Junior Jen Lococo (Easton, PA/Freedom) earned her team-leading 10th win of the season allowing just six hits and three runs over six innings, striking out four. Lococo also had one hit and two RBIs at the plate. Steiner finished 2-for-5 with six RBIs and two runs scored, Andrews had two hits and scored twice, and senior Kristen Cybularz (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll) had two hits, two runs, and two RBIs.
Senior Kyra Monarek (Allentown, PA/Parkland) and sophomore Brianna Chilcoat (Northampton, PA/Northampton) each scored twice in the game two win.
