Newport News, VA (November 12, 2011) – Senior Matthew Germscheid got his chance and he came up big for the DeSales University men's soccer team scoring his first goal of the season and just the second of his four-year career lifting the Bulldogs past York College (PA), 1-0, and into the NCAA Second Round for the first time in team history on Saturday evening.

DSU (15-4-2) knows all too well how today's outcome feels for the Spartans (11-6-5), losing in double overtime to Johns Hopkins, 1-0, playing much of the game with just 10 players in 2007 and losing to Swarthmore College, 2-1, on a goal with less than a minute left last season.

Tonight's game had a similar outcome as York was forced to play a man-down after its goalkeeper was sent off early in the first half after taking down senior Derek Long on a break-away and the game-winner came with less than two minutes left in regulation.

Germscheid's game-winner came at the 88:18 mark as he took a pass down the right side just beating the Spartan keeper to the ball as he raced off his line and Germscheid's sliding shot flew over the GK's head and into the far corner of the net.

The goal broke a scoreless streak of 320 minutes as the Bulldogs were shutout in its season finale at FDU-Florham and in the Freedom Conference playoffs semifinal vs. Eastern University.

DSU is now 1-4 all-time in the NCAA Tournament losing in the first round in its previous four appearances in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2010.  The Bulldogs advance to the second round where they will face the winner of the other first round game between Christopher Newport University and Randolph College that was set to begin tonight at 7:30 pm at CNU.

The Bulldogs had a 17-15 edge in shots, while York had all eight corner kicks in the game.  Freshman Colin Sulpizio made three saves in between the pipes to record his third shutout of the season.

The 15 wins match a personal best for head coach George Crampton, who's Bulldogs also won 15 games in 2005 and 2010, and is two wins shy of tying the school-record of 17 wins set in 1988.
