Center Valley, PA (April 17, 2011) – The DeSales University softball team continued its hot hitting scoring 14 more runs on Sunday to earn a doubleheader sweep of Delaware Valley College by scores of 11-3 and 4-3 on a windy Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs have now won five straight games, matching their longest winning streak of the season and improve to 16-8 overall and 7-3 in the Freedom Conference. The Aggies fall to 9-17 overall and 3-7 in the Freedom Conference.
DSU continued its hot hitting up and down the lineup on Sunday, totaling 17 total hits, nine of which went for extra bases including three home runs in the game one win.
In the opener on Sunday, the Bulldogs scored six runs in the first inning and two more in the second and ended the game in the fifth with a three-run walk-off home run off the bat of junior
Brianna Chilcoat to give DSU an eight-run lead (11-3) after five innings.
Senior
Kate Steiner had two hits and scored two more runs out of the lead-off spot and senior
Jen Lococo had two hits, two runs scored, and two RBI's, including her 19th career home run, moving her just one behind
Kelly Moran for the all-time lead. Sophomore
Julie Brugger had two hits and an RBI, freshman
Courtney McKenna scored twice, and junior
Shelly McCarthy hit a grand slam in the first inning to highlight the offensive attack.
Lococo earned the win in the circle, scattering eight hits over five innings allowing just two earned runs and striking out three.
In the second game, the Bulldogs fell behind 3-0 on a three-run home run from DVC's
Erin Fox in the fourth inning plating three unearned runs. DSU chipped away with two runs in the fifth on an RBI double off the bat of Lococo, scoring Steiner and Chilcoat, and took a 4-3 lead in the sixth on and RBI single from Steiner and a game-winning RBI double scoring Steiner from fellow senior
Kristin Schultz.
Junior
Christine Petrilla earned the win with three innings of scoreless relief allowing three hits and striking out three. Junior
Katie Morrissey pitched well, lasting four innings, allowing just three hits, and those three unearned runs, also striking out three.
Steiner had two more hits and two more runs scored, moving her into second place on the all-time hit list with 172, six behind Lococo. Schultz tossed in two hits in game two, Lococo had two more RBI's and sophomore
Brittany Wilson had her first career hit, a double in the second inning.
The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday, April 21st when they host King's College in an important Freedom Conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
