Katie Morrissey tossed her first career no-hitter and the DeSales University softball earned its second straight sweep and third and fourth straight wins, topping Kean University, 12-4 and 8-0, in a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
Morrissey's no-hitter came in the second game, as she tossed five innings of no-hit ball, allowing three walks and striking out six. She did not allow a base-runner until the fifth inning improving to 3-2 on the season. It was the sixth shutout of her career and the six K's give her 294 in her career, six shy of becoming just the second player in school history to record 300+ strikeouts in a career.
The offense was clicking all afternoon, totaling 20 runs and 22 hits in the two games. In support of Morrissey in the second game, senior
Jen Lococo hit her second home run of the day, a three-run shot, senior
Kate Steiner had one hit and two RBIs, junior
Christine Petrilla added a hit and two RBIs, and freshman
Courtney McKenna added two base hits. Seven different players scored runs in the game two win.
In the opener, freshman
Brittany Wilson earned her second win of the season, pitching 2.1 innings of relief of Lococo who started the game. Trailing 3-0 in the third inning, the Bulldogs exploded for seven runs and added two more in the fifth and three in the sixth to win by the eight-run rule.
Steiner was 3-for-4 with three runs scored, senior
Kristin Schultz had two hits and three more RBIs, giving her a team-high 18 on the season, Lococo added three more hits and four RBI's, Petrilla had three base hits, junior
Shelly McCarthy hit her first career home run and had three RBIs, McKenna added two more hits, and junior
Brianna Chilcoat continued her torrid play with three runs scored, reaching base four times.
Steiner, who yesterday broke the career assist mark with 322 career assists, moves within three runs scored to break the all-time record of 112 career runs scored. Lococo, who yesterday broke the career RBI record, became the first player to ever record 100+ RBIs in a career and now has 106.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Tuesday when they host local rival Moravian College in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
