Dallas, PA (April 14, 2012) – Misericordia University scored solo runs in its last at-bat on both ends of a Freedom Conference doubleheader to record identical 5-4 wins at Anderson Field on a picture perfect Saturday afternoon.
The losses drop the Bulldogs to 9-18 overall and 3-7 in the Freedom Conference entering the final two weeks of the season. DSU remains mathematical alive for a Freedom Conference playoff berth but will need to win its final four conference games and have other results fall its way.
In the opener on Saturday, the Cougars (20-12, 8-2 Freedom) took a 4-0 lead after two thanks to three first inning runs and another tally in the second inning. DeSales rallied with three runs in the third inning on RBI hits from freshman
Kayla Adanalian and senior
Brianna Chilcoat and tied the game in the fourth on an RBI single from junior
Julie Brugger.
Both teams went scoreless in the fifth and sixth innings and after the Bulldogs left a runner stranded at first in the seventh, MU came to bat and eventually scored the game-winner on an RBI double from
Megan Hardy.
Junior
Brittany Wilson took the loss despite pitching well allowing just one earned run over 6.2 innings of relief, striking out two. Adanalian led the way at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two doubles.
In the second game, DSU once again fell behind, this time, 2-0 after two innings, but took a 3-2 lead in the top of the third inning scoring three runs on just one hit, a lead-off double from Brugger, and three Cougar walks.
MU re-took the lead, 4-3, with two runs in the bottom of the inning before DeSales tied it in the fifth when Chilcoat singled, stole second base, and scored on a single from senior
Christine Petrilla.
The game remained tied in the bottom of the sixth when MU's No. 9 hitter laced a solo home run down the left-field line giving the Cougars a 5-4 lead and eventually the win after DSU went in order in the seventh.
Freshman
Rachel Vogel took the loss, also in relief of senior
Katie Morrissey. Vogel pitched well allowing just one hit, the solo home run, over 3.2 innings, striking out four.
The Bulldogs return to action on Tuesday when they travel cross-town to take on local rival Moravian College in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
