Center Valley, PA (April 26, 2012) – Freshman Rachel Vogel earned her fifth win of the season and fellow freshman Taylor Kelly delivered a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning lifting the DeSales University softball team to a doubleheader split with #21 William Paterson University in non-conference action on Thursday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (14-22 overall) dropped the opener, 4-1, before rebounding from a 3-0 game two deficit to win 4-3, handing the Pioneers (29-9) just their ninth loss of the season.

In the opener, WPU's Michelle Graham was perfect thru five innings before freshman Carly Bartholomew led off the sixth inning with a towering home run to left-field to make it a 2-1 game.  The Pioneers added two more runs in the seventh as Graham allowed just one more hit and retired DSU in order in six of the seven innings.

Senior Katie Morrissey took the loss, allowing seven hits over seven innings, walking five, and striking out three.  She moves within four strikeouts now of becoming just the second pitcher in school history to record 400 career K's.  Bartholomew and Kelly had DSU's two hits in game one.

In the second game, WPU took a 3-0 lead in the top of the fourth inning, but the Bulldogs countered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning to trail, 3-2.  Senior Christine Petrilla knocked in the first run with a bunt single scoring fellow senior Brianna Chilcoat and freshman Shelby Wilson singled home junior Julie Brugger two batters later.

Still trailing by one run entering the bottom of the sixth, DSU loaded the bases on two hits and a Pioneer on a sacrifice bunt attempt.  Sophomore Courtney McKenna tied the game with a sacrifice fly and after a fielder's choice ground out and a walk to Bartholomew re-loaded the bases with two outs, Kelly came thru with a looping base hit over the shortstop's head scoring Wilson staking DSU to a 4-3 lead.

Vogel then worked around a bloop single to lead-off the top of the seventh inning by Paterson on a line drive double play to Brugger to end the game.  Vogel earned her fifth win of the year, scattering nine hits over seven innings, striking out two.

Petrilla finished game two, 3-for-3 with three infield hits, Chilcoat had two hits and stole two bases, and Wilson also had two hits in the game two win.

The Bulldogs conclude Freedom Conference play on Saturday, April 28th when they host Manhattanville College in a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
