Center Valley, PA (April 16, 2013) – Freshman
DJ McCauley fired a six-hit shutout and hit a two-run home run in a 3-0 game one win and rescued the Bulldogs in game two with a walk-off solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning salvaging a wild 13-12 win and giving the DeSales University softball team its first-ever doubleheader sweep of local rival Moravian College.
The Bulldogs (19-6-1), who split a doubleheader with the Greyhounds each of the last three years, earned their first-ever sweep over its local rival and have now won 10-straight game on the season. Moravian falls to 26-8 overall with the two losses.
In game one McCauley did it all allowing just six hits and leaving the bases loaded full of Greyhounds in both the sixth and seventh innings to preserve her fourth shutout of the season. She struck out five and walked just two, both in the first inning, in the win.
McCauley also provided the offense, hitting a two-run home run to right centerfield in the third inning to break a scoreless tie and finished with two of DSU's six hits in the game one win. DSU's other run was an unearned tally in the fifth on a single from freshman
Emily Hockman scoring pinch-runner, senior
Meredith Kelly. Hockman also had two hits in game one.
The second game was a wild one totaling 25 runs and 28 hits between the two teams.
After both teams scored twice in the first inning, DSU took complete control scoring four times in the second inning on RBI singles from freshman
Michelle Gessner, senior
Julie Brugger, and sophomore
Carly Bartholomew and added five runs in the fourth thanks to a grand slam home run from sophomore
Taylor Kelly to give the Bulldogs an 11-4 lead thru four innings.
DSU put its first two runners on base in the bottom of the fifth and needed just one run to win by the eight-run rule, but Moravian pitched out the jam and scored twice in the sixth to make it an 11-6 game.
In the top of the seventh, Moravian saw its first three runners reach base on two infield hits and a fly ball to left field dropped giving the Greyhounds life with one run, the bases loaded, and no one out. A two-run single by
Elizabeth Tillou tied the game and an RBI single from
Rachel DeLucia gave MC its first lead of the day, 12-11, entering the bottom of the seventh inning as Moravian pushed across six runs, only two earned, in the top of the inning.
Gessner immediately tied the game with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the frame and after Hockman grounded out to the pitcher, McCauley went yard for the second time on the day, hitting a laser beam off the scoreboard to give DSU a wild 13-12, walk-off win.
Gessner was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBIs, Hockman had two hits and two runs scored, McCauley finished 2-for-3 with three runs scored, and senior
Julie Brugger went 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Brugger now stands just one hit shy of 100 career hits, making her the 18th player in team history to reach the 100-hit plateau.
Senior
Brittany Wilson earns the win pitching 1.2 innings allowing six hits and two earned runs. Sophomore
Rachel Vogel earns a hard-luck no-decision, scattering 10 hits over 5.1 innings allowing four earned runs and striking out three.
The Bulldogs are now four wins short of tying the all-time mark for consecutive wins and will put their 10-game winning streak on the line on Thursday when they travel to Alvernia University for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm.
