Center Valley, PA (April 6, 2013) – Freshman
DJ McCauley fired a no-hitter in game one and sophomore
Rachel Vogel followed that performance up with a three-hit shutout of her own as the DeSales University softball team stayed unbeaten in Freedom Conference play with identical 8-0 wins in two five inning games on Saturday afternoon.
In the opener, McCauley worked around a jam in the first inning after a Bulldog error and walk had runners on first and second with two outs and then allowed just one more base-runner (a hit batter) the rest of the way to earn her fifth win of the season, striking out eight.
The offense sputtered at the start scoring one unearned run over the first two innings but tallied four in the third on two RBI singles from sophomore
Shelby Wilson and sophomore
Ericka Esposito, two more runs in the fourth on a solo home run from McCauley and an RBI double from sophomore
Carly Bartholomew, and freshman
Emily Hockman drew a bases loaded walk with two outs in the fifth to finish off the eight-run win in five innings.
McCauley added two hits and two runs scored at the plate, Bartholomew reached base all three times she was at the plate, Wilson was 2-for-3 with three runs scored, freshman
Samantha Gibson finished 3-for-3 with an RBI, and Esposito went 2-for-2 with two RBIs.
In the second game it was Vogel's turn in the circle and she did not disappoint firing a three-hit shutout allowing just one single in the first and back-to-back singles in the fourth, one of which dropped in between the shortstop and second baseman that should have been caught. Vogel earned her second win of the season, striking out five and not issuing a walk.
The offense scored twice in the first, three times in the third, twice in the third, and once more in the fourth. Senior
Julie Brugger and Wilson had RBI hits in the first, Hockman had a two-RBI double in the second, and Bartholomew knocked in the eight run of the game with an RBI double in the fourth.
Freshman
Michelle Gessner scored twice out of the leadoff spot and Bartholomew finished 2-for-2 in the game and 3-for-3 with three walks on the day.
The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow when they put its unblemished Freedom record on the line in a doubleheader with Misericordia University at home beginning at 1:00 pm.
