Madison, NJ (April 12, 2014) – FDU-Florham scored consecutive comeback wins rallying in the bottom of the seventh in each game sweeping two from the DeSales University softball team by a 7-6 score in each end of the Freedom Conference doubleheader on Saturday afternoon.
In the first game DeSales (9-10, 4-4 Freedom) led the entire game as sophomore
Michelle Gessner led off the game with a home run and DSU plated three more runs in the second on a hit by pitch and Devil error with two outs.
It was a 4-2 game to start the sixth when the Bulldog tacked on two more runs in the sixth on an RBI double from freshman
Alexa Beaumont who later scored on a steal of home.
DSU still led 6-2 entering the bottom of the seventh when FDU rallied scoring four times to tie the game at six on four hits, a walk, and one Bulldog error.
Neither team was able to plate a run in the seventh, eighth, or ninth inning as the game entered the 10
th with the international tiebreaker rule implemented. In DSU's half of the 10
th inning they were unable to plate the lead-off runner on second-base as consecutive pop outs stranded runners on the corners. In the bottom of the 10
th, FDU's
Jenna Appello bunted with the runner on second and the throw to first was high allowing the Devils'
Nikki Caruso scampered home on the over throw to win the game.
Sophomore
DJ McCauley took the loss allowing 10 hits and four earned runs over nine innings pitched, striking out 10. Junior
Kayla Adanalian led the offense with three hits and sophomore
Amanda Setzer added two base knocks in game one as all nine starters had at least one hit.
In the second game DSU trailed 3-2 after four innings before Beaumont came thru again with a two-run home run plating McCauley in the fifth inning and the Bulldogs added two more runs in the top of the sixth on a sacrifice fly from sophomore
Emily Hockman and an RBI double from McCauley to give DSU a 6-3 lead.
FDU got two runs back in the sixth and with DSU leading 6-5 entering the bottom of the seventh inning the Devils were once again rallied using a hit by pitch, a double, a sacrifice bunt and a ground out to tally the game-winning runs giving the home team a 7-6 win.
Junior
Rachel Vogel was tagged with the loss allowing eight hits and seven runs over six innings pitched. McCauley had three hits, while junior
Taylor Kelly, Hockman, Beaumont, and junior
Carly Bartholomew all had two hits in the loss.
The Bulldogs are right back at it tomorrow traveling to Misericordia University for a very important Freedom Conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 pm.
