Center Valley, PA (April 24, 2014) – The DeSales University softball team held leads in both games but the 21st ranked William Paterson Pioneers used late inning comebacks in both ends of a non-conference doubleheader to sweep the Bulldogs by scores of 6-4 and 6-2 on Thursday afternoon.

In the first game DSU (11-16 overall) plated three runs in the bottom of the third inning to take a 3-1 lead on RBI singles from sophomore DJ McCauley and sophomore Samantha Gibson and a sacrifice fly from sophomore Carly Bartholomew.

WPU tied the game in the top of the fourth and then added a run in the fifth before the Bulldogs re-tied the game at four in the bottom of the fifth when McCauley scampered on a failed pick-off throw by the Pioneer catcher.  Paterson responded in the top of the sixth however scoring two runs to take a 6-4 lead and despite putting runners on first and third with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, DSU was unable to plate another run in the game one loss.

Senior Brittany Wilson took the loss allowing two runs in two innings after taking over for McCauley who pitched the first five frames allowing eight hits and two earned runs, striking out five.  McCauley had three hits, while sophomore Michelle Gessner and Gibson added two hits in game one.

In the second game, DSU took a 2-1 lead in the third inning scoring once in the first on an RBI single from Bartholomew and once in the third on an RBI single from McCauley plating junior Taylor Kelly.

The lead remained into the fifth when WPU scored twice on three hits and one Bulldog error to take a 3-2 lead and added three insurance runs in the seventh on four hits and another DSU error as DeSales was unable to get anything going offensively over the final four innings.

Junior Rachel Vogel suffered the loss allowing 13 hits and four earned runs over six innings, striking out five.  McCauley had two of DSU's five hits to lead the way at the plate.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday when they travel to Delaware Valley College for the final Freedom Conference games of the regular season needing a sweep to stay alive in the hunt for a berth in the Freedom Conference Tournament next weekend.
