BOX SCORE (Game 2)
Center Valley, PA (March 27, 2010) – Prior to Saturday the longest game in DeSales University softball history was 11 innings, but since that time DSU has now played two 12-inning games, winning both of them, including a 9-8 win over local rival Moravian College helping the Bulldogs split a non-conference doubleheader with the Greyhounds on Tuesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs improve to 20-16 overall after the split, while Moravian slips to 26-10 overall. In the first game DSU managed just four hits as MC blanked DSU, 4-0. Sophomore Katie Morrissey (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) took the loss allowing two runs over 3.1 innings to fall to 7-8 on the season.
In the second game DeSales trailed 3-0 entering the fifth inning but tied the game with three tallies in the top of the inning thanks to RBI hits from sophomore Brianna Chilcoat (Northampton, PA/Northampton) and junior Kate Steiner (Walnutport, PA/Northampton). MC re-took the lead in the bottom of the inning before DSU tied it again at four with an unearned run in the top of the sixth.
The game moved to extra innings in the eighth as the international tiebreaking rule was implemented right away. DSU loaded the bases in the eighth with one run already home and no one out but were unable to plate any extra runs as Moravian tied the game in the bottom of the frame. Both teams were able to plate the tiebreaking runner in the ninth and both teams were unable to score in the 10th.
In the 11th, senior Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) doubled to plate a run but again Moravian tied it in the bottom of the 11th. In the 12th, sophomore Shelly McCarthy (Allentown, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) plated sophomore Christine Petrilla (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert) to put DSU up 8-7 and this time junior Jen Lococo (Easton, PA/Freedom) was able to set the side down in order stranding the runner at second base in the bottom of the inning giving DSU the win.
Lococo pitched all 12 innings, a single-game record at DeSales, allowing just six hits over those 12 innings for her eighth win of the season. Steiner had two hits to lead an eight-hit attack for the Bulldogs. Senior Kyra Monarek (Allentown, PA/Parkland) scored twice in the game two win.
The Bulldogs return to action on Thursday when they host Alvernia University in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 3:00 pm. For those unable to attend LIVE Stats will be available to follow the game's progress.
