BOX SCORE vs. King's
Doylestown, PA (May 7, 2010) – The first three hitters in the lineup went a combined 8-for-11 with six runs scored and five RBIs in a 10-4 game one win over Misericordia University, but a costly error in the fourth inning of a 1-0 game in game two led to five unearned runs for King's College and the Bulldogs never recovered in a 9-5 loss to the Monarchs in game two as the DeSales University softball team will now need to win three games on Saturday to claim its second Freedom Conference title in the last three years.
The Bulldogs (24-18 overall) fall to the loser's bracket for the second straight year after a game two loss and will return to action on Saturday at 11:00 am, playing the winner of the first elimination game between Manhattanville College and Misericordia University being played at 9:00 am. The winner of the Bulldogs game will advance to the Freedom Conference title game but will need to defeat King's twice in the double elimination tournament to earn the conference title. In the first game on Friday, the Bulldogs jumped all over the Cougars plating six runs in the first inning to take a 6-0 lead. Misericordia got within 7-4 in the top of the fifth inning but DSU answered with three runs of its own and cruised from there.
In the first inning junior Kristin Schultz (Laurys Station, PA/Parkland) drew a bases loaded walk to start the scoring, senior Kristen Cybularz (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Carroll) followed with an RBI single, and sophomore Brianna Chilcoat (Northampton, PA/Northampton) had the big blow, a bases clearing double to give DSU a 5-0 lead. Senior Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) finished off the first inning rally with an RBI single.
In the third inning Andrews added another RBI single and in the fifth after the Cougars had rallied to get within three runs, junior Kate Steiner (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) doubled home Andrews and junior Jen Lococo (Easton, PA/Freedom) hit a two-run home run to regain the six-run lead. The homer by Lococo tied the single-season record for dingers in a season at eight.
Andrews finished the game 4-for-4 with two runs scored, Steiner had two hits and two runs scored, Lococo was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBIs, Cybularz scored twice, and Chilcoat finished with two hits and three RBIs. Sophomore Katie Morrissey (Lanoka Harbor, NJ/Lacey Township) earned the win, tossing a complete-game allowing just five hits and four runs, striking out four, for her eighth win of the season.
In the second game DSU had several chances to score in the first and third innings leaving the bases loaded in the bottom of the first inning and runners on first and second in the third inning. King's got on the board first with a solo run in the top of the third but broke the game open in the top of the fourth with five unearned runs after a costly error early in the inning extended the Monarchs at-bat and led to a three-run home run from Lindsey Hoerner.
The Monarchs added two runs in the fifth, but the Bulldogs stayed alive in the bottom of the inning with one run on an RBI single from sophomore Christine Petrilla (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert). Trailing 9-1 entering the bottom of the sixth, DSU again rallied to pull within four runs, scoring four times in the sixth on RBI hits from Chilcoat, Andrews, and Lococo, but the Bulldogs were unable to get a rally started in the seventh.
Lococo took the loss allowing nine hits and eight runs (three earned) over 4.2 innings pitched. Andrews continued to hit at the top of the order with two more hits, Lococo added three hits and two RBIs, and Petrilla had two hits in the game two loss.
