Fr. Gambet served as the University President from 1978-99.  During his time as president, Fr. Gambet was instrumental in shaping the athletic department.  He guided the school into becoming members in the NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) and a member of District 19.  Later, along with Athletic Director Tom Shirley, Fr. Gambet began the process of gaining membership into the NCAA.  in 1987-88, DeSales was granted membership and later secured membership into the ESAC (Eastern States Athletic Conference) with schools like Cabrini College and Eastern University.  DeSales then left the ESAC for the PAC (Pennsylvania Athletic Conference) before eventually joining the MAC (Middle Atlantic Conference) Freedom Conference, where the Bulldogs started competing in 1997-98.
